The Cape softball team was in the game, but fell to 3-6 with a 3-0 loss to Indian River April 23 at Bill Cordrey Field.
Each team had four hits in the game. Cape’s Madison Lubiniecki had two hits, including a double, while Jordynn Bowe and Makaila Sellers each had one.
Vikings sophomore Sara Craig started the game in the pitching circle, going three innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out one batter. Freshman Riley Windish came in for four innings, allowing one run and striking out two.
“It’s another tough loss for us,” said Cape coach Mike Tkach. “The girls played better than we did before, but we still made some mistakes that came up and beat us. I thought we had a little bit more support for the two pitchers behind them, but we had a couple mistakes that happened that came up and bit us.”
The Vikings bounced back with an 11-8 victory over Red Lion April 25. Each team garnered 11 hits in the game.
Lubiniecki went 2-for-4 to lead the Vikings. She hit a home run and collected three RBIs. Mia Scott and Makaila Sellers had two RBIs. Emma Reynolds and Bowe each knocked in a run.
Craig toed the rubber, striking out four batters, while Windish struck out a pair pitching in relief.
“Well, it feels really good to get a win,” said Tkach. “Once again, one inning hurts us, but the girls rallied again and got the job done. The duo of Sara and Riley did a good job. That’s where we are right now. Those two have to get it done for us together. Madison has really swung the bat well this week, and I’m so happy for her. I feel Jordynn is swinging the bat a lot better lately, so good things are coming around. It was nice to have [Olivia] Mekulski back from her injury.”
The 4-6 Vikings travel to Smyrna Tuesday, April 28, to face the Eagles.
