Cape swimming opens season with win over Polytech

December 9, 2019

The Cape boys’ and girls’ swim teams started their seasons off on the winning side with a 104-57 boys’ victory and a 127-27 girls’ win over the Panthers Dec. 5 at the Sussex Family YMCA pool.

Both Vikings squads took first place in all 11 events.

“Polytech had a lot of swimmers this year, which is great news for our conference,” said Cape head coach Bill Geppert. “As it was the first meet of the season, we had to prepare for everything. I was really proud of the way our kids swam. They all swam tough, giving everything they had. Hats off to our coaching staff Pete Olson, Rick Brokaw and Tina Nigh for preparing them for success. We have a long way to go, but we are super excited about the progress we have made up to this point.”

“I thought it was a good early season performance,” said junior Thomas Weeks. “Everyone showed up. I’m excited about the new additions to the team. I was really happy with the medley relay this early in the season.”

The 200 medley relay team of  Weeks, Joshua Turek, Sam Schoenfeld and Marcus Gromofsky swam a time of 1:51.47.

“This meet was great because, as our first meet, it gave us an idea of where we stand,” said senior Anna Stancofski. “Both boys and girls swam their hardest, and our times helped us realize where we are now and where we want to be as the season progresses. It was fun to see everyone cheering each other on, and we will definitely continue to do so in the future.”

“I think that each and every one of the girls put their best effort forward at the practices and it definitely could been seen during this meet,” said sophomore Heidi Simmons, who won the 500 free with a time of 6:39.44. “I think it’s amazing how each girl on our team got to race in the meet. They all did outstanding in their events. I just want to help all that I can and watch all of them excel throughout the season. I have a good feeling about this year and can’t wait to see what’s to come.”

The Vikings will host Seaford Thursday, Dec. 12, at the Sussex Family YMCA pool.
