Cape swimming strokes past Sanford

January 19, 2021

The Cape swim teams moved to 2-0 on the season Jan. 18, topping Sanford at the Sussex Academy Aquatic Center.

The girls took a 101-21 victory, while the boys swam past the Warriors 93-62.

Cape’s 200 medley relay team of Alissa Silva, Amaya Daisey, Aya Daisey and Erin Morrissey took first with a time of 2:08.25. Heidi Simmons won the 200 free in 2:20.15. Amaya Daisey won the individual medley in 2:34.43. Aya Daisey took first in the 50 free with a time of 26.25. Aya Daisey won the 100 fly in 1:04.39. Erin Morrissey won the 100 free with a time of 1:00.62. Julie Heffernan won the 500 free in 6:07.35. Daisey, Daisey, Morrissey and Anna Sullivan won the 200 free relay in 1:59.99.

“This meet was the first time many people on our team were able to swim some different events this season, which made for a fun swim meet,” said senior Lindsay Rambo. “Even though it was the second meet of the season, there were a decent amount of personal bests, which just shows how hard everyone has been working at practice. I think that the effort everyone has been putting in will only continue to show Friday when we swim Sussex Tech. They are a good team, which will make for a competitive meet. I look forward to having that competition along with our upcoming meets next week.”

Cape’s Thomas Weeks, Josh Turek, Brian Fleming and Marcus Gromofsky won the 200 medley relay in 1:49.64. Turek won the 200 free in 2:00.11. Weeks took first in the 200 individual medley at 2:12.36. Josh Reinhold topped the field in the 50 free in 23.47. Fleming won the 100 fly with a time of 59.68. Gromofsky won the 100 free in 51.65. Weeks won the 500 free with a time of 5:20.37. Reinhold, L.B. Harrington, Aaron Senturk and Gromofsky won the 200 free relay in 1:37.34.

“I’m really proud of Cape for stepping up for our first two meets,” Weeks said. “I’m excited to see how we stand against some stronger competitors like Tech on Friday.”

“The team is looking strong,” said junior Marcus Gromofsky. “It’s going to be a tough meet with Sussex Tech and Cape having good swimmers on both ends. It should be an interesting meet to watch.”

“Another meet in the Sussex Academy pool allows our kids to feel comfortable at that facility,” said Cape coach Bill Geppert. “Sanford was a small team, but we definitely wanted to swim them because they had some quality swimmers. We have some huge meets coming up, so the more we can swim there will only improve our chances.”

The Vikings return to the pool Friday, Jan. 22, to face the Ravens of Sussex Tech.
