Cape throws down in 2020, beating Lake Forest 9-0

Noelle Sabbagh scores four goals; Julie Heffernan earns a shutout
October 21, 2020

Cape hockey screamed into the 2020 season with buzzsaw relentlessness Oct. 20, with sticks and assists inside the circle, including three backhanded goals, for a 9-0 emphatic victory over a good Lake Forest team.

The Vikings led 4-0 after the first 15-minute quarter. The score was 5-0 at halftime and by rule the clock was running in the second half.

The neon-orange shoes of Noelle Sabbagh and Reagan Ciabattoni (a WC Eagles thing) were flashing like strobe lights in an entertainment district all game long. All that was missing was the music.

Sabbagh finished with a career-best four goals and added an assist. Ciabattoni had two goals and two assists. Samantha Connors, an inserter on corners while playing center-back for the first time in her career, scored a pair of goals.

Lily Ashby scored eight minutes into the game when the outcome was still in doubt, staking Cape to a 2-0 advantage.

Cape outshot the Spartans 22-4 with an 8-2 advantage in penalty corners. Julie Heffernan went the distance in goal, earning the shutout with four saves.

Lake goalies Addyson Stewart and Brianna Hammond combined for 13 saves.

Cape ran the roster versus Lake, playing several freshmen. Grace Wiggins started the game.

Lake won the junior varsity game 2-0 on goals by Mariana Whaley and Ellie Biddle.

Goalie Madison Lawson had six saves for the Spartans.

Anna Lopez and Morgan Newcomb each had a save for the Vikings.

Cape is scheduled to play at Caesar Rodney Thursday, Oct. 22, before hosting Caravel at 12:45 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 24. They will play at Sussex Academy Tuesday, Oct. 27.
