On the final day of September, the Cape unified flag football team played its first game of the 2026 season against Indian River to begin the defense of its 2025 state title.
The hosts struck first to put the Vikings in an early hole, but Jaxon Benton ripped off a 35-yard touchdown run to even things up early. But IR was on a mission. Cape knocked them out of the semifinals last season and it seems the players remembered, as they cruised to a 49-20 victory over the Vikings.
Despite the loss, there were plenty of bright spots for the squad. Harley Jones ended the first half with a 35-yard run into the end zone, igniting cheers from both sidelines.
For Cape’s final points, it turned into the Xavier Zimmer show. The junior reeled in a short-yardage screen, dancing and sprinting his way down the sidelines for a 38-yard touchdown. Still hungry for more, Zimmer took the reins at quarterback for the point-after try and dropped a dime into the end zone that Jaxon Holgerson high-pointed for the conversion.
On defense, Benton picked up a hat trick in the sack category, while Julian Puente added another. Zane Richardson picked off a pass in the effort.
The Vikings will head to Smyrna for their next game at 3:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 5.
