The Cape volleyball team came out sluggish and fell 16-25, 22-25, 15-25 to a very physical and powerful Newark Charter squad Sept. 26.
“Newark Charter is arguably a top two or three team in the state right now," said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. "They’re a strong physical team that has options to score in various ways. Their two middles are elite in skill and are the type of players we haven’t run into yet."
Despite the score, Coupe said he thought the offense ran well. The team limited errors and took advantage of big swings when given the opportunity.
"They served us tough, which I think hurt us overall," Coupe said. "It’s a good reminder of what we’re capable of, while still giving us a humble alert of the simple tasks at hand that can’t be overlooked to have success.”
Senior Harper Mamele said the Vikings often struggle with the big hitters from upstate schools.
"Newark Charter has great hitters all the way around, and we didn't play really well today," she said. "We just need to brush past our mistakes now."
Two days earlier, the Vikings downed the Smyrna Eagles 26-24, 25-23, 25-11 at home.
Sophia Winkfield led the Vikings' attack with 37 assists. Amara Fruchtman bumped 20 digs.
Mamele and Camilla Willis knocked down 18 and 17 kills, respectively. Smyrna senior Madisson Pierce led the Eagles with 12 kills.
Cape's JV moved to 7-0 on the season with a 2-0 win over Newark Charter and a 2-0 victory over the Riders.
