Cape volleyball powers past Tech

Vikings move to 3-4
September 30, 2019

The Cape volleyball team poured it on the Ravens with a 25-7, 25-7 and 25-9 victory Sept. 26 at Sussex Tech.

“Our whole team focus in every aspect was vastly improved today as opposed to past matches,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “Our serving was consistent and aggressive. Defensively, we let no balls go untouched. Offensively, when our sets weren’t there, we were swinging aggressive but with a purpose. Earlier this season, we were swinging just to swing. Today, we were taking smart attacks that forced Tech out of system. That’s what we need to keep doing – not to just try for the kill in the mind-set, but in the mind-set of how do I push them out of system.”

The Vikings spread out the wealth by receiving stats from all 14 players on the team.

Abby Derrickson led the Vikings with 16 assists, five aces and seven digs. Simran Patel, Bre Kusen and Rileigh Wilson teamed for 17 kills. Katie Knarr and Emily Lamb recorded 12 digs.

“This is just another step on the ladder, and we have to keep climbing that ladder to get to the end goal,” Derrickson said. “But we’re not going to rush it there. We have to take it one step at a time and one game at a time. Tonight was just another step.”

“Coupe says 1 percent better every single day,” Wilson said. “That’s what we work for each and every day.”

The Cape coach also had kudos for one of his his senior captains, Taylor Iacono.

”Taylor is 100 percent the spiritual leader for this team this year,” he said. “Where she goes, our team will follow. She is our morale compass. Her demeanor, her style and her abilities as a leader will take this team very far.”

Nataleigh Hunter and Sydney West led the Ravens with four digs and four assists, respectively.

The junior varsity Vikings defeated Sussex Tech 25-12, 25-15 to move to 3-4.

The Vikings will travel to Wilmington Tuesday, Oct. 1, to face the Vikings of St. Elizabeth. Sussex Tech will welcome Delmar.
