Senior Blake Fitzgerald slams a kill. The No. 11 Cape boys' volleyball team pulled off a 25-16, 25-19, 25-22 victory over No. 6 Odessa May 13 in the opening round of the state tournament. The Vikings will face Appoquinimink Saturday, May 16, at home in the second round.
The Vikings used balanced scoring to ground the Ducks. Senior Braxton Figgs slammed 12 kills and had three blocks, while Lawson Whaley and Ryder Van Horn knocked down 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Setter Jason Harpel-Richards sprayed around 30 assists, and libero Anton Schierenberg bumped 10 digs.
"We got the job done," said Van Horn. 'We definitely could have done it cleaner, though. Missed serves hurt us a little. If we clean that up, we can go further."
"I'm glad that we could come to their gym and beat them as the underdog," said Harpel-Rickards. "We kept our composure and won the points when it mattered."
"One thing I felt was off was their body language. It wasn't where I wanted it to be," said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. "They looked a little tense. It's not our first time in the playoffs. Our offense ran really well. Jason spread out the ball in really good places. A little more focus and execution, and we'll do well Saturday."
