Cape wins Division I state hockey title

Delmar beats Tower Hill 3-2 in Division II championship
November 18, 2017

The Cape Henlopen field hockey team is back on top of the mountain. The Vikings claimed their sixth state championship in seven years Nov. 18 with a 1-0 win over Sussex Tech in the Division I state championship game at the University of Delaware’s Rullo Stadium.

Sophomore Cam Smith scored the lone goal of the game in the second half.

Cape and Sussex Tech combined to win state championships in eight of the last nine years. Sussex Tech won two in a row in 2009 and 2010, then the Vikings won five straight from 2011-15. Delmar broke the streak last season.

This was the first year the DIAA split the field hockey tournament into two divisions.

In Division II championship action, Delmar won its second consecutive state title by defeating Tower Hill 3-2 in a game played just prior to the Division I championship at Rullo Stadium.
