Cape wrestling beats Blue Hen champs 43-28

Three dual meets left for the 14-4 Vikings

William Penn wrestling defeated Delcastle 46-21 Jan. 31 to secure the Blue Hen Conference regular-season title. The Colonials’ stud 195-pounder Nasir Dreuitt sustained a leg injury and was not able to wrestle Feb. 1 at Cape. The Vikings were missing Juan Lares (160) and Jackson Handlin (195) from the lineup. 

“Every team has a story of injuries and guys going down or up a weight class,” said Cape coach Chris Mattioni. “I just know that William Penn was 10-4 and well coached with tough kids.”

Cape got falls from Luke Bender (138), Finbar Rishko (152), Cam Smith (195) and Lucas Ruppert (285) to win the match 43-28 to improve to 14-4 with matches remaining with Polytech, St. George’s Tech and Sussex Tech.

William Penn got wins by pin from Devaughn Corbett (160), Ijai Twyman (220) and Thomas Murray (106). 

Other Cape victories were CJ Fricthman (126) with a 12-1 major decision, Carson Kammerer (132) with a 4-3 overtime win, Mikey Frederick (145) with a 13-4 major decision, Andre Currie (170) with a 25-10 tech fall, and Gary Hayes (182) with an 8-4 decision.  

William Penn wins excluding pins were by Michael Lane (120) with a 15-0 tech fall and Daniel Sinclair (113) with a 15-0 tech fall.  

Cape will host Polytech Wednesday, Feb. 5, on Teacher Appreciation Night.
