Cape wrestling downs Laurel 58-9 on Senior Day

February 11, 2021

Cape wrestling defeated visiting Laurel 58-9 on Senior Day Feb. 10, using five pins and three forfeits to earn the win.

The Vikings recognized five seniors, including Arthur Bennett, Richard Garcia, Bryan Garcia, Mike Elphick and Jackson Handlin. Handlin was recognized for his 100th career win.

The Vikings are scheduled to finish the dual-meet season Friday, Feb. 12, hosting Delaware Military Academy. A wacky weather forecast could amend the schedule.

“Saturday is the last day for dual-meet competition,” said coach Chris Mattioni. “DIAA wants two weeks before the state meet.”

Cape got pins from Arthur Bennett over Connor Smith in 5:45 at 106, Josh Wright over Jeremiah Stanley-Ross in 1:02 at 120, Mikey Frederick over Kyler Weaver in 1:59 at 138, Luke Bender over Skyler Nagel in 0:46 at 145, and Jackson Handlin over Brelyn Williams in 3:05 at 220.

Cape’s other wins included Mike Elphick 9-0 over James Johnson at 170, Dalton Deevey over Travis Rife 3-1 at 182, and Grant Barczak over Cody Drummond 7-5 at 126.

Laurel wins came from Jacob Davis over Alex Taylor 6-3 at 195, Elijah Niblett over Rony Perez 3-1 at 113 and Xavier Limehouse over Bryan Garcia 6-5 at 132.
