William Penn, Caravel next on the schedule
January 21, 2021

The Cape wrestling team rolled over Polytech 57-6 Jan. 20, improving to 3-0 on the season.

The Vikings will grapple with unbeaten William Penn Saturday, Jan. 23, before hosting Caravel Monday, Jan. 25.

“Poly fielded a full team [one forfeit at 285]; they are well coached and wrestled tough,” said Cape coach Chris Mattioni.

The match was tied after three bouts, as Poly’s Drew Carney (106) won 7-6 over Arthur Bennett, Cape’s Rony Perez-Mejia (113) pinned Elliot Miller, and Poly’s Avery Rosah (120) defeated Braydon Cole 9-2.

The Vikings then won 10 consecutive matches, getting pins from Mikey Frederick (138) over Maxwell Gray, Luke Bender (145) over Kaden Carney, and Alex Taylor (195) over Lathan Miller.

Winning by tech fall for Cape (15 points or greater) were Bryan Garcia (132) and Carson Kammerer (160).

Grant Barczak (126) and C.J. Fritchman (152) won by major decision.

Closely contested matches were Jeb Zolper (170) with a 3-2 win over Emeil James Ragland, Dalton Deevey (182) with a 1-0 win over Greg Long, and Jackson Handlin (220) with a 5-2 decision over Connor Bartlett.

Handlin was trailing 2-0 entering the final period and chose the bottom. He never seems in a hurry on the mat. The cagey senior then executed a reversal and near fall to win 5-2. He smiled and shrugged, “I just wrestle that way sometimes.”
