After blowing away Connecticut in the opening game of the Junior Baseball East Regional, Cape/Georgetown fell in their second game to Maryland 6-5 Aug. 3 in Freehold, N.J.

Josh Reinhold and Kye Wells each had an RBI. Wells slammed a triple, while Nick Cox delivered with a double and a stolen base.

Down 6-0 in the second inning, Reinhold came in from the bullpen to shut down Maryland, striking out nine batters.

“We had one bad inning,” said Cape/Georgetown manager Zac Crouch. “And we just couldn’t pull it out.”

On Aug. 4, Cape/Georgetown defeated Jaffrey-Rindge Mt. Monadnock from New Hampshire 11-9 in their first game of the losers’ bracket. Wells went 2-for-2 with four runs scored. Mikey Jarrell delivered with a 2-for-3 performance and five RBIs. Cox, Luke Crouch, Paris Mitchell, Reinhold, Jonathan Stokley and Wells each knocked in a run.

Cape/Georgetown used six pitchers in the game. Timmy Hitchcock, Crouch, Wells, Justin Marsh, Cox and Carter Breasure threw in the win, teaming for seven strikeouts.

“It’s not rolling along,” said Crouch. “It’s managing along. Managing pitchers, that is.”

He spoke about the new Little League rule that pitchers cannot throw in three consecutive games no matter how few pitches they deliver from the mound.

“We have to play seven games in five days to win the tournament,” he said. “You really have to manage the appearances.”

Cape/Georgetown continued to battle back through the losers’ bracket with an 11-1 defeat of host Freehold Township Aug. 5.

Marsh went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. He also pitched four innings, giving up just one run. Kenseth Taylor came in to close the game.

Cox went 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored two runs. Wells went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Hitchcock went 2-for-3 scoring a run. Reinhold went 1-for-2 with three walks and scored two runs.

Cape/Georgetown was set to return to the diamond at 4 p.m., Monday, Aug. 6, versus New York.
