Capital Ringers to begin new year at Conley’s
Capital Ringers is a community English handbell ensemble, founded in 2004 by Artistic Director Linda Simms. The singers are renowned for their vast repertoire, including classic rock, jazz, patriotic, sacred, top 40 tunes, and traditional holiday favorites. Finishing up their season, which included television appearances and nine live shows, the group offered a concert at its new home at Conley’s United Methodist Church Dec. 15.
Following their Sussex County fan base, the Capital Ringers have officially moved. Conley's Church offered a space where they can store a growing stockpile of equipment and their instrument collection, as well as being able to host large events onsite. Their new base of operations will not impact performances in other states and northern Delaware.
A typical performance requires about 15 ringers plus a percussionist. Each ringer is assigned at least two bells, which represent white keys on a piano. The average ringer is not a professional musician, but does read music and is motivated to learn. Non-ringing volunteers also help the group by writing grants, designing programs and fundraising.
In January, the group will begin rehearsals for upcoming shows, and a handbell Spring Ring Festival being planned for Saturday, March 30, at Conley's Church. This event is for local handbell choirs to rehearse together and perform for the public with, proceeds going to a local charity.
