Carmel B. McQuade, devout Catholic

January 18, 2020

Carmel B. McQuade, 90, of Bethany Beach, formerly of Potomac, Md., passed away peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020, at Beebe Healthcare, Lewes.

Carmel was born in Limavady, Ireland, Aug. 25, 1929, daughter of the late Francis J. McGowan and the late Bridget (Brolly) McGowan.

She was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, and participated in the women’s Sodality for many years. She was also involved with the local Red Hat Society.

Carmel loved living at the beach and taking walks along the Bethany boardwalk, and would greet anyone she passed by with a smile.  Carmel will always be remembered as the “best mom in the whole world” who raised five children and never lost sight of her role as a mother.  Her grandchildren, and more recently great-grandchildren, won her heart!

She is survived by her five children, Kevin McQuade of Virginia, Lucy Osgood of Oregon, Kathy Goodman of Ocean View, Frank McQuade of Maryland and Elizabeth Bennett of Florida; two sisters, Kathleen Willingham and Maureen Valis; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, and will be forever in their hearts.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21, at St. Ann Catholic Church, 691 Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach.  Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Dagsboro.
