Carole Kamrad named Lewes library volunteer of the year

The Lewes Public Library is extremely fortunate to have the support of nearly 400 volunteers from around the greater Lewes community.

In a normal year, volunteers contribute more than 13,000 hours, or about 257 working hours each week, essentially contributing the equivalent effort of seven full-time employees.

The pandemic changed a lot of things in 2020, but it didn’t dim the enthusiasm that neighbors have for supporting the Lewes Public Library. As library staff raced to modify decades-old service models, pivoting programs to online platforms, initiating the Keep Cape Reading program, and reimagining STEM and craft activities as grab-and-go bags, the library volunteers remained steadfast and determined to support its activities when and where they could.

As more information became available, safety protocols were outlined that allowed volunteers and staff to work together in the library again. Each year, library staff members come together and nominate volunteers for the annual volunteer of the year award, and the winner for 2020 is Carole Kamrad.

Kamrad has been an invaluable volunteer since 2013, having mastered numerous behind-the-scenes roles like circulation desk duties, pre-opening activities and the critically important interlibrary transit system. She is one of the library’s most valued volunteers and the first one asked to train new volunteers as they join.

Before she moved to Delaware, Kamrad volunteered at a nursing home, visiting its residents. She has such a warm heart. There is no one more worthy of this prize and the legislative proclamation that comes with it than Kamrad.
