'Cavalleria Rustiana' and 'Pagliacci' to broadcast April 25 at Cape High Theater

April 20, 2015

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation present The Metropolitan Opera’s live broadcast of a dual performance Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” and Leon Cavallo’s “Pagliacci” at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 25, at the Cape Henlopen High School Theater. Please note the early start time.

Opera’s most enduring tragic double bill returns in an evocative new production from Sir David McVicar, who sets the verismo action across two time periods but in the same Sicilian setting. Marcelo Álvarez rises to the challenge of playing the dual tenor roles of Turiddu in “Cavalleria Rusticana” and Canio in “Pagliacci.” Rae Smith (“War Horse”) has designed the moodily atmospheric 1900 village square setting of “Cavalleria Rusticana,” which transforms to a 1948 truck stop for the doomed vaudeville troupe of “Pagliacci.” Eva-Maria Westbroek, playing Santuzza in “Cav,” and Patricia Racette, as Nedda in “Pag,” sing the unlucky heroines. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi is on the podium.

Lunch from Hobos Restaurant will be available in the atrium of the high school starting one hour before curtain and continuing through the intermission.

In addition to the opera performance, the HD series features Met opera stars conducting live interviews with cast and/or various production crew members while showing behind-the-scenes workings. This is the last in The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD series of live simulcast transmissions for 2014-15.
