May 26, 2021

The Golden Knights softball squad moved into the 2021 DIAA semifinals with a 6-1 thrashing of Appoquinimink May 25 in Georgetown. They will face Laurel Thursday, May 27, in Georgetown.

Central outhit the Jags 14-1 in the game.

Junior Katie Evick led the Knights’ charge with a grand slam in the fourth inning. Only three runs scored, though, as one runner didn’t touch home plate.

“Our offense came up big when needed in this game, from the top of the lineup to the bottom,” Evick said. “Our defense was solid throughout the whole game behind solid pitching. We have been coming out strong all season and plan on keeping the momentum going in Thursday’s game.”

Kaylee Verosko went 3-for-3 in the game with a homer in the third. Catherine Hassler, Takyla Davis and Mya Jones each had two hits, while McKenna Boyle delivered a hit and knocked in an RBI.

Freshman pitcher Madge Layfield picked up the win, striking out 14 batters while giving up just one hit. The fans gave a collective gasp when she took a drive off her left wrist from the bat of Appo’s Madison Bauerle.

“I thought we took great at bats through the whole lineup, and we were patient,” said Central head coach John Wells. “The defense really played well. Takyla showed great range on a pop-up that appeared like it would fall in. Amara [Cropper] played really well on bunt coverage at third. I think we played all-around good defense.

I think these players are very grounded and won’t get overconfident. We know that everyone is really good at this point.”
