Wreaths laid during Memorial Day ceremony
June 1, 2022

The First Town in the First State took time May 30 to pay respect to the men and women who helped protect the area throughout its illustrious history.

Remembering those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, lawmakers, historical societies, veterans and residents gathered at Lewes Presbyterian Church Memorial Day. Organized by the Col. David Hall Chapter of the National Society Daughters of American Revolution, the ceremony was held at the gravesite of Col. Hall, but honored all those who gave their lives to preserve democracy and freedom, both domestically and internationally.

The Cape Henlopen High School JROTC color guard presented the red, white, and blue stars and stripes alongside the colonial blue and buff Delaware flag with precise marching and an excellent formation. Sen. Ernie Lopez, R-Lewes, complimented the unit as the best and brightest. Lopez went on to explain the sacrifice Col. Hall made four score and seven years before Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg address. Lopez emphasized the commitment that must remain to continue honoring those who have fallen in the line of duty and never to forget their service.

Rep. Steve Smyk, R-Milton, a Delaware National Guard veteran, said the freedoms enjoyed today are made possible by the sacrifices of the men and women serving in the armed forces.
