The event honored the outstanding individuals and groups who dedicate their time to supporting older adults across Sussex County.
Nine nominees from various CHEER programs were recognized for their selfless service, ranging from Meals on Wheels delivery to activities at their different sites.
The 2026 Volunteer of the Year nominees are Nick and Joann Varrato, admin/Operation Christmas CHEER and Meals on Wheels; Naydeline Aguilar-Lopez, Café Salud Bilingual Senior Center; the Salvation Army, Georgetown Meals on Wheels delivery team; Ella “Miffy” Kiback, Greenwood CHEER Center assistant; Zwaanendael Women’s Club, Harbour Lights Lewes receptionists and assistants; Maggie Smith, Long Neck CHEER Senior Center assistant; Rick Rinderle, Milton Meals on Wheels delivery; Andrew Oxendine, Ocean View Meals on Wheels and medical transportation; and Sheldon Bastow, Roxana Meals on Wheels and medical transportation.
Nearly 200 CHEER volunteers were in attendance to celebrate the service of these individuals and groups.
The keynote speaker was Gov. Matt Meyer, who provided special remarks addressing the volunteers and attendees during the ceremony.
The event culminated with the announcement of Long Neck CHEER Senior Center Assistant Maggie Smith as CHEER’s 2026 Volunteer of the Year.
"My legs feel like they are going to buckle," said Smith. "I'm just so honored to be chosen as CHEER Volunteer of the Year."
