Chicks for Charity event to benefit Read Aloud Delaware May 21

May 12, 2019

Read Aloud Delaware will be the beneficiary of the Chicks for Charity event set for 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 21, at Irish Eyes in Lewes.

The cost is $30 per person for a full dinner buffet including choice of entrée, desserts, and coffee or tea. Payment is cash-only at the door; a cash bar is also available.

Read Aloud Delaware is a children’s literacy program founded in 1983. Its mission is to ensure that each preschool child in the state is regularly read to one-on-one. Research has shown the importance of reading to young children as a predictor of future academic success. Proceeds from the Chicks for Charity event will help support Read Aloud Delaware’s work in 37 childcare centers, Head Start programs, preschools and elementary schools in Sussex County and the program’s 250 volunteer readers.

Chicks for Charity was founded by Kari Ainsworth and Marcie Urgo in 2010 and is dedicated to supporting charitable organizations that assist those less fortunate in Sussex County. Past events have benefited children, families, the elderly and other underserved populations.

Guests at the May event can purchase raffle tickets for more than 45 items including home décor, clothing, jewelry, food and beverage baskets, and gift cards to local businesses. Tickets are six for $5.

There also will be a silent auction of higher-priced items including original artwork by artists Karen Carpenter and Robi Cavagnaro, a brunch for 10 in one’s home catered by Food by Design, and an antique basket with a champagne picnic for two. Pure Zen and Funky Lady also are among the donors. All raffle and auction payments must be made by cash or check.
