Chief Judge Jeffrey S. Sutton to discuss ’Essential Scalia’ Jan. 27

January 20, 2022

The Lewes Public Library’s Lives in the Law lecture series will welcome Chief Judge Jeffrey S. Sutton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit for an online discussion of his book “The Essential Scalia: On the Constitution, the Courts, and the Rule of Law,” at 5 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 27, via Zoom.

“The Essential Scalia” is the definitive collection of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s opinions, speeches and articles on the most essential and vexing legal questions. With an intimate foreword by Justice Elena Kagan, the book presents Scalia on his own terms, allowing readers to understand the reasoning and insights that made him one of the most consequential jurists in American history. Sutton will present this extraordinary work in conversation with legal scholar and Lewes Public Library Distinguished Lecturer Ronald Collins.

“Chief Judge Jeffrey Sutton is a man of many talents,” said Collins. “After graduating from law school, he clerked for federal appellate Judge Thomas Meskill and then for two Supreme Court justices, Lewis Powell and Antonin Scalia. Thereafter he was in private practice and later served as solicitor general of Ohio. He has argued no fewer than a dozen cases in the Supreme Court. In 2003, he was confirmed to sit on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, where he now serves as its chief judge.”

The discussion is free to the public. Registration is required. To sign up, go to lewes.lib.de.us.

Collins is the former Harold S. Shefelman Scholar at the University of Washington Law School. He served as a Supreme Court fellow for Chief Justice Warren Burger and is editor of the weekly blog First Amendment News.
