Children’s author entertains children, families

Eric Litwin performs at Lewes Public Library

Kids and families filled the community room at Lewes Public Library June 29 for an entertaining visit with New York Times No. 1 best-selling children’s author Eric Litwin.

A former third-grade teacher, Litwin sang and played guitar as families clapped and danced. Litwin said he was inspired to write his “Pete the Cat” book series when a student told him he didn’t want to read.

“Books have to compete with iPads, TV, games and so much more, so we have to make them more interactive and fun,” Litwin said.

In a show humorous for both kids and parents, Litwin combined his passion for early literacy and music to engage his audience while reading from his “Pete the Cat,” “The Nuts” and “Groovy Joe” book series.

“Kids are three to four months behind grade level because of the lack of reading over the summer,” he said. “All you have to do is read every day, and you can read whatever you want! Your library has a wonderful summer reading program, and I hope everyone signs up.”

Lewes Public Library children’s services coordinator Jennifer Noonan said 200 free tickets were available for both morning and afternoon shows, and all were claimed well in advance. The performance was made possible by Sussex County Department of Libraries and the Delaware Division of Libraries.

Litwin’s books have sold over 11.5 million copies, been translated into 17 languages and won 25 literacy awards including a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Award.
