Cinema by the Canal to screen ‘Top Gun’ in Lewes July 12

Attendees can bring a blanket or lawn chair and maybe a picnic for the first movie in the free Cinema by the Canal series. The 1986 classic “Top Gun” will be shown at dusk, Thursday, July 12, in Lewes Canalfront Park on the banks of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. The movie, known for its heart-stopping aerial scenes, is free thanks to the support of Citizens Bank and Friends of Lewes Canalfront Park.

Devil-may-care Navy pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise, is sent for advanced training where he vies with for the coveted Top Gun award. When not so occupied, Mitchell carries on a romance with civilian consultant Charlie, played by Kelly McGillis. Shaken up by the death of a friend, Maverick loses the Top Gun honor. Thinking he may have lost his nerve, Maverick is given a chance to redeem himself during a tense international crisis involving a crippled U.S. ship and a group of enemy planes.
