Claude H. Benner, retired claims examiner

Claude H. Benner, 82, of Milton passed away Friday, Sept. 6, 2019, at home in the care of Delaware Hospice and his loving friends. He was born Aug. 28, 1937, to the late Carl O. and Louisa Hagee Benner in Coatesville, Pa. 

He attended Coatesville public schools, graduating in 1955, going on to graduate from Dickinson College in 1959 with a major in economics and a minor in history. As a member of ROTC, he entered basic training at Fort Meade.  From 1962-96 he was a SSA claims examiner. He retired in 2000. He also served the Ohio National Guard, Fort Hayes, earning the rank of captain. 

Claude had a great sense of humor, was a fisherman, enjoyed photography, and loved gardening, trees, and landscaping.  His favorite holiday was Christmas, and he always decorated his home beautifully. He also enjoyed baking from scratch, especially cookies and cakes. He was a member of NARFE, the Dirty Hands Gang of the Lightship Overfalls, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxillary, the Easy Striders Walking Club, and American Legion Post 28.  

He is survived by his longtime friend, Hazel Meegan; a stepson, Michael Bradley; and a stepdaughter, Sherry Hanke.  He has three grandchildren, and a cousin: Charles G. Hagee. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother: Carl O. Benner Jr.

A Committal Service, with conferring of military honors, will be held at the Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, Thursday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to either the Lightship Overfalls, P.O. Box 413, Lewes, DE 19958, or Delaware Hospice 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
