A 22-year-old Georgetown man is in custody on more than $300,000 bond following an emergency bond hearing Sept. 27.
Clay D. Conaway was arraigned on six counts of second-degree rape and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $310,000 secured bond. Conaway was out on $70,000 secured bond following his indictment Aug. 20 on first-degree rape. Since then, five additional victims contacted the Delaware State Police Major Crimes, stating they all were sexually assaulted by Conaway, said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of the Delaware State Police.
Two victims said they were sexually assaulted by Conaway in 2013, one in 2017 and two more in 2018, Jaffe said.
On Sept. 27, a notification from Delaware’s prison message system stated that Conaway was in prison custody. Jaffe said an emergency bond hearing was held and $240,000 was added to the $70,000 secured bond set in August. Conaway was committed to SCI and ordered no contact with victims or their families, Jaffe said.
He is scheduled to appear in Sussex County Superior Court Monday, Oct. 1.
Police continue to investigate, and only limited information will be released at this time because of the sensitivity of this case and consideration of the victims, Jaffe said.
Anyone with information in reference to any additional criminal incidents involving Conaway is asked to contact Troop 4, Major Crimes Unit, Detective D. Kristunas at 302-752-3856. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or at delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.
