Clear Space Theatre’s Bow Tie & Barefoot Gala returns after pandemic pause

September 19, 2021

The annual Bow Tie and Barefoot Gala, held at Kings Creek Country Club, was a joyous occasion for Clear Space Theatre supporters Sept. 11. The event was smaller than before to allow for social distancing; however, the enthusiasm for the gala was bigger than ever.  Over 160 people came to celebrate the success of the theatre and support the organization as it enters its 18th season in 2022.  The gala included a silent auction cocktail hour preceded by the 2022 Season Preview, then dinner and an awards ceremony.  Those in attendance were the first to see and hear the shows that will be on stage at 20 Baltimore Ave. next year.

Clear Space Theatre’s 2022 Season includes “39 Steps,” “Sylvia,” “Victor/Victoria,” “Emma, A Pop Musical,” “The Lightning Thief,” “The Submission,” “9 to 5,” “Grease,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Other Desert Cities,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “The Little Mermaid” and “Elf.”

In addition to the excitement of the upcoming season, Clear Space Theatre recognized those who played significant roles for the company. Paul Weagraff, retired executive director at the Delaware Division of the Arts, was honored with the Spotlight on Advocacy Award for his overall impact on the arts organizations in Delaware.  Ida and Jeff Rowe, sponsors and volunteers at Clear Space, were honored with the Spotlight on Volunteerism Award.  The Spotlight on Artistic Endeavors Award went to an all-around artistic person who shares her talents with theatres throughout Sussex County, Lorraine Steinhoff Leavel.  Leavel is an actor, costume designer, director, music director and a mentor to so many in the local arts community.  Clear Space created a fourth award this year to honor board members with outstanding service.  The inaugural award went to Carl Schloegel, who served seven years on the Clear Space board of directors and was instrumental in the kickoff of the Rehoboth Avenue project.

Although there were fewer people in attendance at the 2021 Gala, a record amount was raised for Clear Space Theatre.  Over $32,000 was raised to support the company and its mission to inspire audiences, artists, and students by providing high-quality performances and educational experiences to residents and visitors to Southern Delaware.
