Coastal Club gardeners support Cape Henlopen Food Basket

August 9, 2020

Neighbors in the Coastal Club community in Lewes toasted summer with cocktails in their community garden.

The evening event was for garden box neighbors to meet and greet each other, share gardening topics and support the Cape Henlopen Food Basket with fresh produce donations.

With proper social distancing, more than 60 gardeners and friends turned out to mix and mingle and to donate garden harvests of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini and more, picked directly from their individual community garden boxes.

The event netted more than 385 pounds of donated pantry items, 46 pounds of produce and a generous monetary contribution.

With so many social restrictions in 2020, the community garden has become a respite and a source of joy for Coastal Club residents with a garden box. In turn, garden box holders were eager to share the results of their hard work in a way that would benefit the local community. Every green pepper counted.

In its third year of operation at the Coastal Club community, the community garden is a popular resident amenity. It includes 100 garden boxes, an herb garden, nine pollinator gardens, bird houses and compost bins.

“With an abundance of produce and a desire to help the local community, we came up with a way to pass along fresh food and other donations to the charity. Socializing was the cherry on top for our gardeners who were very generous and really had that spirit to give,” said Barbara Shuster, garden chairman.
