Coastal Concerts music scholarship applications due Feb. 1

November 20, 2018

The Lewes-based nonprofit organization Coastal Concerts has announced its 2018-19 Music Scholarship Program.

Scholarships are available to young musicians from middle school age through high school age students. Vocalists, guitarists, percussionists, and brass, woodwind or string players are encouraged to apply.

Coastal Concerts may award scholarships of up to $1,500 each to high school students residing on the Delmarva Peninsula, one of whom must be a resident of Sussex County. This year, CC is also introducing an award scholarship of up to $1,000 for middle school students residing in Sussex County. Students will be competing only against those in their own age group. Scholarships will be awarded based on performance. Scholarships may be used for music camps, university courses, instrument purchase or repair, or music lessons.

All applicants must complete the application form, which will include a music resume, a brief essay, letter of recommendation and a link to a YouTube video of two contrasting pieces. For complete guidelines and application forms, go to www.coastalconcerts.org.

Applications must be postmarked no later than Friday, Feb. 1, and the selected candidates will be notified in March. The scholarship recipients will be recognized during the final performance of Coastal Concerts’ 2018-19 subscription season, Saturday, March 16.

The annual scholarship competition is just one element of Coastal Concerts’ comprehensive commitment to promoting classical music appreciation. Other initiatives include school-based performances by professional concert artists, free youth and discounted student admission to concerts, free community lectures and performances, and collection of used but playable musical instruments for donation to local schools.

Since the introduction of the scholarship competition in 2006, 28 students have received awards totaling $30,000. For more information, go to www.coastalconcerts.org.
