Coastal Concerts to present pianist Orion Weiss March 15-16

March 10, 2019

One of the most sought-after soloists in his generation of young American musicians, pianist Orion Weiss will perform the fifth concert in Coastal Concerts’ 20th anniversary season of world-class classical music in Southern Delaware. The performance will take place at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 16, in Bethel United Methodist Church Hall, at Fourth and Market streets in Lewes. Weiss will give a talk at 6 p.m. before the concert.

He will also perform an outreach concert at 1 p.m., Friday, March 15, at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes.

Weiss was named the Classical Recording Foundation’s Young Artist of the Year in September 2010, and in summer 2011, he made his debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood as a last-minute replacement for Leon Fleisher. In recent seasons, he has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, National Arts Centre Orchestra and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and in duo summer concerts with the New York Philharmonic at both Lincoln Center and the Bravo! Vail Valley Festival. In 2005, he toured Israel with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Itzhak Perlman.

His deeply felt and exceptionally crafted performances go far beyond his technical mastery and have won him worldwide acclaim.

A native of Lyndhurst, Ohio, Weiss attended the Cleveland Institute of Music. In February 1999, Weiss made his Cleveland Orchestra debut performing Liszt’s “Piano Concerto No. 1,” and in March 1999, with less than 24 hours’ notice, he stepped in to replace André Watts for a performance of Shostakovich’s “Piano Concerto No. 2” with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He was immediately invited to return to the orchestra for a performance of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto in October 1999. In 2004, he graduated from the Juilliard School, where he studied with Emanuel Ax.

Tickets to the March 16 concert are $35, with free admission to each youngster 18 and under with an accompanying adult. Discounted tickets are available at $10 for students 19 and older, and for active-duty and retired career military personnel. Valid IDs are required for student and military discounts.
