Local Toys for Tots organizers seek volunteers

Toys for Tots is seeking volunteers to collect toys, sort and pack, and distribute donated toys to local kids. Nassau DE LCO, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation local campaign organization, will be conducting distribution from a new centrally located facility near Georgetown.

Commitment of time can be minimal or as much as one would like to offer. Help is needed from people who have trucks and are familiar with the area to call on participating businesses and transport donated toys to the sorting facility. Packing and handing out toys takes place at the Georgetown facility.

Volunteers needed for literacy program

Read Aloud Delaware is looking for volunteers to read to children. Volunteers usually read 1-2 hours per week in local childcare centers. Anyone interested can sign up at readalouddelaware.org or call 302-856-2527.

Rummage sale and trunk ‘n’ treat at Long Neck UMC Oct. 30

Long Neck United Methodist Church will host a rummage sale and take-out lunch sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 30, at 32051 Long Neck Road, Millsboro. The Long Neck UMC Sunday School will present a free drive-thru trunk ‘n’ treat community outreach event from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 30. A large Halloween bag full of candy, toys and treats will be provided for each child in a vehicle when exiting the parking lot, while supplies last. A total of 100 treat bags will be handed out.

Patriotic student contest entries due Oct. 31

Greenwood Memorial VFW Post 7478 and its Auxiliary announce that the 2021-22 student entry brochures have arrived for the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy contests, with entries due by Sunday, Oct. 31. Contest entrants must follow all rules and guidelines.

How Can I Be A Good American? is this year’s theme for the annual VFW Patriot’s Pen Contest open to students in sixth to eighth grades in public, private or parochial schools and home schools.

America: Where Do We Go from Here? is the theme for the VFW Voice of Democracy Contest open to students in ninth to 12th grades.

Brochures with the contest rules and guidelines may be found at the Bridgeville Public Library or Greenwood Public Library, and from Harry Blake at Woodbridge High School and Woodbridge Middle School. Possum Point Players 'White Christmas' director applications due Oct. 31

Possum Point Players is seeking director applicants for Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.” The deadline to submit applications is Sunday, Oct. 31, for this production scheduled for December 2022. This show is the first Possums' revival leading into its 50th anniversary season.

Unitarian Universalists to meet Oct. 31

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold an in person and live-streamed services 10 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 31. Ancestors will be honored and participants may bring or email a photograph or special object for sharing with one another during this service. Reservations are required for the in-person service. VFW Auxiliary 7234 announces scholarship contests

The VFW Auxiliary 7234 of Ocean View announced the following scholarship contests. The Patriot's Pen essay contest entries from students in sixth to eighth grade are due Sunday, Oct. 31, as are Voice of Democracy audio essay contest entries from ninth- to 12th-graders. Continuing education scholarship entries are due Tuesday, Feb. 15. Creative Patriotic Art contest entries from ninth- to 12th-graders are due Thursday, March 31. Rehoboth library Friends group to meet Nov. 2

The Friends of the Rehoboth Beach Public Library will host its annual meeting at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 2, in the upstairs meeting room at the Rehoboth library. Attendees should enter via the library’s rear door; the front gates are locked until normal library hours. All are welcome as the library director will present an annual review. Friends board members also will be elected. The Friends group supports the library’s acquisition of new books and materials and provides funds for the library’s many activities and programs.

Cash bingo at Cape Henlopen Senior Center Nov. 3, Dec. 1

The Cape Henlopen Senior Center will host cash bingo at 1 p.m., Wednesdays, Nov. 3 and Dec. 1. To reserve a spot, call 302-227-2055.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Bingo starts at 1 p.m. with Cookie Jar, Screwball and Pot of Gold tickets to be sold. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

UMES Small Farm Conference set Nov. 5-6

UMES Extension will hold its 18th annual small farm conference from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 5, and 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 6, with events at and around its campus in Princess Anne, Md.

A premier event for agricultural stakeholders in the Mid-Atlantic, the conference includes demonstrations on UMES’ research and education farm, bus tours to private farms nearby, workshops, vendor exhibits and knowledgeable guest speakers. Indoor sessions will be limited to 25 people, bus tours will be limited to 50 people, and masks and social distancing will be required.

The cost is $60 general admission, which includes both days, or $35 for one day, not including a nominal fee for registration. To register, go to umes.edu.

CHEER seeks Nov. 6 craft show vendors

CHEER will hold a fall holiday craft show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Warren L. and Charles C. Allen Jr. CHEER Community Center, 20520 Sand Hill Road, Georgetown. Crafters and hobbyists are invited to rent space; cost is $35 for an 8-foot table, and extras are are $10 per 6-foot table. No outside tables are allowed.
