CR boys and Smyrna girls win Henlopen Cross Country Championships

The 2017 Henlopen Conference Cross Country Championships contested Nov. 4 at Killens Pond State Park saw ideal weather for a walk or run in the park.

Caesar Rodney dominated the boys’ race with 39 points followed by Cape Henlopen 97, Polytech 116, Dover 132, Sussex Tech 154, Lake Forest 154, Smyrna 159, Sussex Central 203, Indian River 204, Milford 226, Delmar 288 and Sussex Academy 328.

Austen Cave of Delmar won the race in 16:17. He was followed by Albert Norman, SC, 16:33; Greg Boyce, Cape, 16:42; Colin Ritchey, CR, 16:48; Aidan Stevenosky, CR, 16:59; Chris Crossan, CR, 17:03; Robert Eskridge, Smyrna, 17:12; Gavin Williams, Dover, 17:21; Aidan O’Connor, CR, 17:22; and Shane Massey, Dover, 17:25.   

The girls’ team title was won by Smyrna with 28 points followed by Caesar Rodney 69, Cape 94, Lake Forest 120, Sussex Tech 149, Indian River 164, Polytech 196, Sussex Academy 224, Dover 247, Delmar 248, Milford 289 and Sussex Central 315.

Naomi Bowser of Smyrna was first in 18:44. She was followed by Olivia Brozefsky, Cape, 20:12; Abby Mace, Smyrna, 20:53; Destinee Ekanem, Smyrna, 20:54; Keely Arndt, CR, 21:00; Riley Wood, Lake Forest, 21:02; Jessica Tyndall, Lake Forest, 21:03; Micayla Meehan, Indian River, 21:05; Sarah Larose, Smyrna, 21:08; and Lillian Crone, Polytech, 21:11.

The DIAA State Championship meet is Saturday, Nov. 11, at Killens Pond State Park. Championship races will be contested in two divisions.

Salesianum is favored in boys’ Division I, while Padua looms as the girls’ Division I favorite.

Tatnall is favored in both the Division II boys’ and girls’ races.
