Cybersecurity workshop for small businesses set June 11

May 20, 2019

The Delaware Small Business Development Center will provide a free workshop on the dangers of outside threats such as cyber-attacks from 8:30 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 11, at 103 Pine St., Georgetown. Attendees will learn how to make their businesses more resilient against hidden dangers.

“Everyone knows about the big cyber hacks at Target, Equifax and Home Depot,” said Jacob Blacksten, technology business advisor with the SBDC. “However, no one hears about the attacks that small businesses face, because typically, the business cannot survive.”

Participants will be provided the tools and knowledge to defend their small businesses from cyber-attacks, and learn about the NIST framework and how to leverage it to stay safe and mitigate the event of a cyber-attack. They will also learn about free resources and tools the SBDC has to offer a small business if a hack should occur so their business will be able to survive.

Business resiliency topics will include being prepared for weather issues, employee theft, best management practices to prevent a disaster, and how to conduct an asset inventory before disaster strikes.

“When you think of resiliency or disaster preparedness, most people think of coastal storm damage. However, your business faces dangers every day, such as auto accidents, computer hacks and loss of a key employee,” said Cindy Small, business advisor with the SBDC. Participants will be provided with free workbooks on cybersecurity and business resiliency.

The program is free of charge, but participants must preregister. For more information or to preregister, go to www.delawaresbdc.org or call 302-856-1555.
