Looking to support local artists and make good art? Give the Developing Artist Collaboration’s new Artpothecary in West Rehoboth a try.

“We want people who don’t identify as an artist to walk away feeling like they can be an artist,” said Leah Beach, DAC founder. “We want their reaction to be like, ‘Oh my gosh!’”

Located on Malloy Street, the Artpothecary falls under the umbrella of DAC’s Out of the Box business. Beach said revenue generated from the Artpothecary is used to fund DAC’s artists and initiatives. This helps keep the lights on for DAC and allows the group to do things for the community, she said.

Beach said customers can choose from about 30 colors of art-quality acrylic paints and 35 shapes for the paint to be poured onto. The paint is applied by first squeezing layers of it into a small plastic cup, then pouring it onto the shape, and finally rotating the paint around on the piece – think coating the bottom of a frying pan with melted butter.

The art is left at the Artpothecary for a few days so it can dry completely and have a high-quality clear resin applied to make it waterproof, said Beach. The art is picked up at a later date or shipped, she said.

Beach said the seating at the Artpothecary operates like a hibachi-style restaurant – each of the three tables can hold up to groups of 10.

The Artpothecary can also be used for parties of up to 30 people. It costs $200 an hour to book the entire space, plus $45 per person doing a project. The price includes a complimentary alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink for everyone in the party, said Beach.

Looking to the future, Beach said the Artpothecary is looking have more shape options and to also offer artist-led sessions.

The hours of operation for the Artpothecary, 37401 Malloy St., are 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday, and noon to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
