DAR Lewes chapter marks 70 years

September 26, 2021

The Col. David Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is a thriving local women’s service organization that focuses on work in local communities to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. With 171 members, the chapter is in its 70th year.

Meeting Sept. 11 on the grounds of its historic Maull House on Pilottown Road in Lewes, members took the opportunity to hold a moment of silence for those who lost their lives and for all first responders of 9/11.

New members inducted at a Sept. 11 meeting are Eleanor Hoffmann, Rebecca Walsen, Eugenia Roskos, Carolyn Hoops, Elisabeth Roskos, Andrea Downs, Michele Thomas, Ann Dougherty and Suzanne Lontor.

DAR promotes the United States Constitution during its official celebration week of Sept. 17-23. Members participate in an array of projects to help preserve the club’s cultural heritage. The next chapter project will involve partnering with St. George AME Church to begin cleaning historic tombstones in the church cemetery on Pilottown Road. Members look forward to being part of the restoration and maintenance of this historic community site.

Continuing through Tuesday, Nov. 30, the chapter is promoting sponsorship of wreaths to be laid at veterans cemeteries nationwide by Wreaths Across America Wednesday, Dec. 21. This national organization coordinates wreath layings on graves of veterans from the Revolutionary War to present-day conflicts, from all backgrounds in life. This is a great way to honor a parent, sibling or friend. In Delaware, wreaths are laid at the veterans cemeteries in Bear and Millsboro. The state society receives a small portion from the proceeds of wreaths purchased online at Delaware State Society DAR Wreaths Across America.
