Daria Horn, famous for her cakes

January 15, 2019

Daria Horn, 71, a longtime resident of the Cape Region, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, at her home in Maitland, Fla. Daria was born Nov. 17, 1947, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Daria is preceded in death by her mother, Marguerite C. Cody Horn, and her father, Captain Maurice A. Horn, USN Ret. Daria was a third-generation descendent of Buffalo Bill Cody. She is survived by her brother, Maury Horn of Grass Valley, Calif.; his son, Ryan Horn and his wife Anna of Fairbanks, Alaska; their three children, Broden, Dracen and Paxsen; and Sherman Carter, her foster son of Milton.

Daria was co-owner, with her former husband, of Kupchick's Restaurant of Lewes, and was the owner of Sweet Art, a cake decorating business in the Cape Region that specialized in personalized cake decorations for any occasion, with an unparalleled appreciation of many hundreds of clients.

As co-owner of Kupchick's Restaurant, Daria served as pastry chef for the first landmark restaurant of Lewes from 1985 until 2001. Known for exemplary pastries and desserts, Daria also created the "roving art gallery" at Kupchick's where many local artists such as Barbara Petterson, Phil Miller and Julie Molyneux had opportunities to present their works in a well-publicized and visible environment.

Prior to moving to Delaware, Daria worked in Washington, D.C., where she was owner of Great Shakes, located on 3rd and Pennsylvania Avenue S.E. It was there that she began her career as a specialty cake decorator, providing commemorative cakes for the SynFuel industry of Iowa, commemorating the signing of the Alaska Lands bill and providing birthday renditions for such diverse people as Ted Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, to name but a few of her high-profile clients.

Daria moved to the Cape Region in 1981 and continued to set standards of edible art through 2015. Some of her Delaware clients included Gov. Mike Castle and Gov. Pierre du Pont.

Burial in Florida will be private. There will be a memorial service for local friends and former employees sometime this spring or summer in Milton, her home for 36 years.

If you would like to make a donation, do so to a charity of your choice in her name.
