Defeat the Meat rib-eating contest set at Bethany Blues of Lewes April 7

March 23, 2019

Bethany Blues of Lewes has the meatiest contest this side of the Indian River Inlet bridge, and it’s back for the fourth year in a row.

Defeat The Meat is taking place at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, April 7, and this year is going to be the biggest, juiciest competition ever. Sponsored by Bud Light, and generally celebrated by rib enthusiasts everywhere, this year’s event will come complete with a live radio broadcast with Whiskey and Randy from Froggy 99.9.

“This year our event has grown, and it should be an exciting night,” said Jessica Nathan, director of operations at Bethany Blues. “Strohm Edwards will be emceeing the event, and we are lining up lots of first responders for our initial round, which is dedicated to them.”

During the initial round, first responders from around the county will go head-to-head in their own round where one colossal eater will win the proceeds from the entry fees plus free entry for the public round and 10 percent of the bar sales for the night. Not to mention full bragging rights. Then, during the public round, entrants will eat their way to glory where the winner will be awarded a new, pristine Defeat the Meat Championship belt, $200 in cold, hard cash and an order of pigs on the wing every day for a full year.

The competition is going to be lit, and the atmosphere will be jovial, so even those who aren’t into shoving tons of spicy ribs into their gut should come on down and cheer on the competitive eaters. Nothing is more American than shouting at people while they try and eat more food than is reasonable, after all.

Attendees also can take advantage of the specials that night. The Bud Light special will be $3 pints and $10 pitchers. And of course, there will be pigs on the wing, for $10 per regular order or $8 for those who dare to try the suicide sauce that the competitors are eating.

Sign-ups will begin at 5:30 p.m., April 7, or those who get their buns down to Blues in Lewes can get on the list ahead of time. Blues will cap the competition at 15 meat eaters for each respective round. There is an entry fee of $25. For more information, call 302-644-2500 or find Bethany Blues of Lewes on Facebook.
