October 31, 2018

Delaware Technical Community College hosted the 2018 NJCAA Region 19 Cross Country Championship at White Clay Creek State Park in Newark on Oct. 28 and finished with a clean sweep, as the men’s team and women’s team each won the Division 1 championship.

Twenty-two teams from New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania participated, with 175 athletes competing in the 8K distance (men) and the 5K distance (women).

Delaware Tech's Michael Graden of Townsend ran his fastest 8K time of 29:57, en route to a third-place finish overall. Right behind him were teammates Dyce Bailey of Dover, fourth, 30:49; Alex Nieves of Newark, fifth, 31:34; Logan Hallee of Newark, sixth, 31:46; and Parker Chandler of Milford, seventh, 32:17. Those finishes also earned all five runners NJCAA All-Region honors. It is the second straight year Bailey and Nieves have earned that distinction.

Also finishing in the top 15 from Delaware Tech were Matt Phillips of Newark (32:23), Stephen Constantinou of Kennett Square, Pa. (33:18), and Xavier Scott of Claymont (34:30).

On the women’s side, Riccy Amaya of Dover had the fastest time for Delaware Tech in 24:48, which placed her fifth overall. She was followed by teammates Elizabeth Allred of Claymont (25:57), Lexi Allred of Claymont (26:51), Tessa Melendez of Wilmington (28:10) and Paige Sharp of Milford (28:45), all of whom placed in the top 10. Amaya and Elizabeth Allred were named NJCAA All-Region runners for finishing in the top 7.

Delaware Tech runners will travel to Garden City, Kan., in November for the national meet.

This was the second year Delaware Tech hosted the NJCAA Region 19 Cross Country Championship at White Clay Creek State Park, a hilly and challenging course.

Delaware Tech’s men’s and women’s cross country teams comprise student-athletes from all three counties of Delaware who attend all four campuses of Delaware Tech. All Delaware Tech sports are open to students actively enrolled at any campus.
