An impressive run from the District 3 team showed the world Delaware can hang with anybody, but the girls came up just short in their quest for a World Series title when defending champion Central won the Senior League Softball World Series 6-4 Aug. 9.
The squad from Grand Blanc, Mich., struck first and managed to put up five runs in the second inning. They added another in the fourth inning before the District 3 bats came to life in the fifth inning.
Delaware’s Journey Hearne scored first for the home team when Adeline Lutz smacked a double into right field. After a 1-2-3 inning, Kimora Harris walked to open up the sixth inning. Her Sussex Central teammate Emma Jackson sent a towering shot over the fence and well into the forest beyond center field. Re-energized and with no outs, Delaware got to work, trailing 6-3.
Cape’s Jordynn Bowe walked and advanced to third on Ava Brock’s double. Cierra Lewis walked to load up the bases. Sophia Bowen’s sacrifice fly plated Bowe, but Central escaped the inning ahead 6-4.
After a lead-off single, District 3 rattled off three straight outs to put themselves in position to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Karly Kruger walked to open up the inning, but the stout defense of Central held on and kept Delaware off the board for the 6-4 victory.
Czechia
In order to reach the championship, District 3 needed to beat the Europe-Africa representatives from Prague, Czechia. Delaware was stung first in the contest as the underdogs put up three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Hearne scored in the bottom of the first inning on Kruger’s sacrifice fly to make it 3-1, but the bats for both teams fell silent until the top of the fifth inning when Czechia scored another run.
Harris made a diving catch just beyond the catcher’s circle to end a bases-loaded threat. Brock then walked to open the bottom of the fifth inning and Sophia Bowen managed to reach first despite a sacrifice bunt attempt, putting runners on the corners. Adeline Lutz singled in Brock and the two-out rally began with District 3 now trailing 4-2. Kruger doubled in Lutz to shrink the edge down to 4-3. Harris played a factor yet again, when she smoked a no-doubt home run to give Delaware a 5-4 advantage.
Lutz stayed busy at the plate when she tripled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring Brock, Bowen and Hearne, expanding the lead to 8-4. Czechia threatened with another run in the seventh inning, but Delaware clamped down for the 8-5 win.
Hawaii
Delaware’s first elimination game came against the West Region team from Honolulu, Hawaii. District 3 cruised to a 10-0 win in six innings. Kruger led the charge with three hits and tied Lutz and Bowen for the team lead with two RBIs each. Lutz shared the runs scored leaderboard with Hearne and Bowe.
