Delaware District 3 defeats East in opening game of World Series

Wroten gets 13 strikeouts
July 31, 2018

Rain held up the game for more than an hour, but it couldn’t put out the fire in the District 3 bats and Taylor Wroten’s pitching, as the host Georgetown All-Stars defeated the East team from Worcester, Mass., 12-0 in the opening game of the Senior League Softball World Series in Roxana.

Wroten pitched a complete game, striking out 13 of the 26 batters she faced. She helped herself out at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

“The umpire had a very friendly zone for me,” said Wroten. ”I love to live on my curveball, and his zone was outside. I just worked there and when they got up on the plate, I worked inside and I worked way off the plate outside and got them to chase a lot.”

But the pitcher has to have the other half of the battery to complement her, and catcher Kelsey Kormanik, who is still playing despite a PCL tear, is that other half.

“Miss Robin [Wroten] calls the pitches, but I help her by communicating whether they are inside or outside, ‘cause Taylor and I know what we do best,” smiled Kormanik, who also went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

The District 3 bats were on fire, picking up 18 hits in the game. Rye Elliott led the host squad by going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

“My coaches leave it up to me whether I can slap or drive the ball,” Elliott said. “I just read my defense and pick what I want to do. It’s really fun to come back from last year and bring the energy back this year. It’s a lot of fun. We have great chemistry.”

“Oh my goodness,” said second base Jordyn DiFava, who delivered a 2-for-5 performance with an RBI. “It’s an amazing opportunity to come back this year. Some girls don’t get the opportunity to play in the World Series, and for us to get it twice, it’s awesome. I was excited for how I played. I just know that my teammates, every single person, play such a vital role, and they came out hot.”

Kylie Kruger went 2-for-4. Amanda Coates, Hadlie Jarvis, Sierra Jones, Sierra Livingston, Macy Layfield and Kayla Evans each had a hit.

“The bats were alive,” said Georgetown All-Stars manager Craig Kormanik. “It took a little time to get their timing down, but they woke up. That little bit of confidence and having a few runs early let Taylor do her thing.”

The 2017 World Series winning manager also gave a little credit close to home.

“Kelsey [Kormanik] and Taylor have such great chemistry out there, and Kelsey sparked our offense with that double, so props to my daughter too,” he smiled. “Every girl on this team has talent. They may not start, but when they get in, they show up.”

The District 3 All-Stars will play the Southwest squad from Waco Texas, Tuesday, July 31, at 8 p.m. on Connie Mack Field.
