August 15, 2022

A Delaware man drove his car into a Capitol Hill barrier Aug. 13, got out and shot into the air before shooting himself, police say.

Richard A. York III, 29, drove his car into a barricade about 4 a.m. at the intersection of East Capitol and Second streets, and the car broke out in flames, said the U.S. Capitol Police.

York got out of the car and then fired several shots into the air, police said. As officers approached the car, police said, York shot himself. No one else was hurt, police said.

At this time, police said, it does not appear the man was targeting any members of Congress, who are on recess. Police said it does not appear officers fired their weapons.

DC’s Metropolitan Police Department is handling the death investigation. There is no further information on where in Delaware York was from.
