Former Woodbridge and Cape football standout Terrique Riddick hosted the inaugural Delaware Rising Stars Football Showcase June 25-26 at Legends Stadium in Lewes. Middle school athletes competed June 25, while the high school-age players were June 26.
"Delaware Rising Stars Football Showcase welcomed over 60 student-athletes from across Delaware and surrounding areas," said Riddick. "Participants ranged from youth through high school athletes, all coming together to compete, develop their skills and gain valuable exposure."
The athletes took part in NFL Combine-style drills and tests to receive verified performance testing results along with position-specific instruction. The athletes also had the opportunity to compete in front of coaches and media for further expoosure.
"The event also helped build relationships within the Delaware football community while providing players with increased exposure and confidence," said Riddick. "The positive feedback from athletes, parents and coaches has created excitement for making the showcase an annual tradition."
The event was supported by about 12 administrators and event staff, along with coaches, volunteers, media personnel and athletic trainers who helped ensure registration, testing stations, field operations and overall event logistics ran smoothly.
Staff working the event were Kshawn Cox of the University of Delaware, Noah Matthews of the University of Delaware, Bradley Anyanwu of the University of Delaware, Aarin Burton of Bethany College, Jaden Davis of Salisbury University, JoJo Kirby of William Paterson University, Logan Wescott of Arkansas State University, Dajon Emory of Arkansas State University, Brenn Scott of West Chester University, Mike Brewer of Shippensburg University and Elijah Sessoms of the University of Delaware.
Accolades for the event went to Andrew Sivels (MVP), Cayvonae Childs (Fastest Man Award) and Joseph Hurd (Best Overall Lineman).
Middle school props went to Xavier Guadalupe (Middle School MVP), Milo Ksebe (Youth MVP), Ian McClain (Middle School Best Overall Lineman), Tracy Jones Jr. (Youth Best Overall Lineman), Ka’yani Lyles (Middle School Fastest Man) and Carter Truitt (Youth Fastest Man).
"I thought the event exceeded expectations," Riddick said. "Seeing more than 60 young athletes come together to compete, learn and support one another was exactly what we envisioned. Our goal has always been to create opportunities for athletes in Delaware to showcase their talents while emphasizing character, discipline and development. The positive response from families, coaches and the community confirmed that this showcase is filling an important need, and we're excited to continue growing it each year."
