Delaware Symphony to perform in Rehoboth Beach Oct. 21

At Epworth United Methodist Church
October 13, 2019

The Delaware Symphony Orchestra, Delaware’s only professional orchestra, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 21, at Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth Beach.

The program will feature a string orchestra performing works by Jennifer Higdon, the Argentinian tango master Astor Piazzola and Piotr I. Tchaikovsky. Delaware Symphony Orchestra Music Director David Amado will conduct.

The performance will begin with three movements from Philadelphia-based composer, Jennifer Higdon’s Dance Card, “Rumpus,” “Jumble Dance” and “Machina Rockus.” The festive opener will be followed by Piazzola’s “Four Seasons” featuring DSO Concertmaster David Southorn as the solo violinist. This work often is compared to Antonin Vivaldi’s seminal work of the same title. The second half of the concert will feature “Souvenir de Florence” by Tchaikovsky.

A second Sussex County concert will be performed at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 17,  at the Cape Henlopen High School Theatre in Lewes. It will feature a quartet of vocal soloists (Othalie Graham, soprano; Kirstin Chávez, alto; Dinyar Vania, tenor; and Grant Youngblood, bass) and the University of Delaware Symphonic Choir performing Schicksalslied, or “Song of Destiny,” by Johannes Brahms and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, “Choral.”

“I am thrilled to be living up to our name, and returning to Sussex county for two performances that bookend our season,” said Amado. “First, a fresh, Argentinian take on the ‘Four Seasons’ by tango master Astor Piazzola, and in May, Beethoven’s triumphant, seismic 9th Symphony.”
