Delaware women compete at Sunfish Women’s North American Championship

Three women sailors, who share decades of Delaware sailing history, recently joined a fleet of 25 women from across the country at the Sunfish Women’s North American Championship at Fairhope Yacht Club in Fairhope, Ala. The event draws some of the best women sailors in North America and is an annual highlight for many sailors.

Connie Miller is a renowned sailor in the class and has sailed in many regattas around the world, including many women’s regattas for more than 20 years in the U.S. With many top finishes to claim, her best finish was a second at Lewes Yacht Club some years ago.

Nancy Jaywork also earned top finishes at the women’s regattas and finished fifth overall at the recent championship regatta in Alabama.

JuneRose Futcher, known to many as JR, in recent years has tried her hand at major Sunfish regattas. She has finished in mid-fleet position in two regattas and is eager to place higher in 2018.

All three sailors have sailed on many U.S. waterways in places like Florida, New York, Texas and South Carolina.

Emily Allen is a young sailor who moved to Alabama with her family and has found her love of sailing in the South. She was thrilled to meet the Delaware delegation and shows promise in competitive regattas. 

The women’s Sunfish regatta is known for intense competition and drawing many sailors of all ages to race for top honors.

The Sunfish is no simple dinghy to master. With advances in technology and controls, the Sunfish is a thriving performance sailboat. The Sunfish is widely popular for Olympic development programs in South America and is raced annually on the international level around the world.
