Delawareans encouraged to sign up for library cards

September is National Library Card Sign Up Month
September 22, 2021

In Delaware, only 52 percent of children read at grade level by third grade; that number drops to 37 percent in 17 low-income ZIP codes, including western and central Sussex County, Dover and Wilmington. Children who are competent and passionate readers by third grade have a strong foundation for success in school and in life. Studies show that children with access to their local library see increases in reading scores on standardized school tests.

That’s why Delaware libraries are proud to partner with the EveryLibrary Institute to encourage Delawareans to get a library card during September, National Library Card Sign Up Month. GetALibraryCardDE.org is ongoing in September to help Delawareans understand the importance of getting a library card.

Libraries are a critical part of the lives of hundreds of thousands of Delawareans. A Delaware library card gives the holder access to millions of books, magazines, movies, programs and more. For many, libraries are a lifeline to help people gain the skills they need to get ahead when times get tough. At Delaware libraries, people can get help finding a job, launching a small business or nonprofit, or finding something to read or watch, or entertain the family.

Parents in Delaware are especially encouraged to sign up each child for a library card. Delaware libraries help young people get ahead through programs that instill a love of literacy, like summer reading and story times. Children can get help with their homework and access high-speed internet, with parental permission.
