Delmarva Christian boys’ and girls’ bball remain undefeated

December 19, 2019

The Delmarva Christian boys’ basketball team defeated previously unbeaten Delmar 80-64 Dec. 17 at home. The Royals move to 7-0 on the season.

Royals senior Andrew Workman, who lives in Delmar, put up 23 points on his community friends, grabbing six rebounds in the process.

Wyatt Kwiatkowski hit five threes and a deuce to record 17 points while grabbing 10 rebounds and making a block. Chris Vonhof scored 16 points, including 10 in the final period, and smacked away six Wildcats shot attempts. Freshman Gabe Herling hit three threes and ended with 11 points, three rebounds and a steal.

”We played well in the first half,” Kwiatkowski said. “Second half we started making more shots, which opened up passing. Once me and Andrew [Workman] started hitting, then we found Chris [Vonhof] and he made some good shots. We were moving the ball well. When Chris went out [with foul trouble], we have to make up for losing his height and have to box out better and crash the boards. Chase [Hesson] did a great job coming in for him.”

Hesson blocked five Delmar shot attempts, grabbed five rebounds and scored four big points.

“We lost to them last year,” Workman said. “Delmar’s my hometown and their players are friends of mine. I really wanted to play well against them.”

“Delmar is a great team,” said Royals coach Micah Twedell. “We knew that coming into the game. But we prepare to play great teams. We’re excited to come out with the victory.”

Delmar’s Jeremiah Beale had 20 points to lead the Wildcats.

The Royals will play St. Georges Tech Saturday, Dec. 21, in the Rumble by the River at St. Georges.

The Lady Royals grounded the Mallards of Worcester Prep 66-47 in a battle of the ESIAC rivals Dec. 16 at Delmarva Christian. They remain unbeaten at 7-0.

Sierra Troyer and Sara Walton scored 22 and 21 points, respectively. Kandice Schlabach added eight.

“It was a good game,” said Royals head coach Jedidiah Roach. ”Worcester is a well-coached and thorough team. We were fortunate to get the victory. Our team is improving and learning about ourselves each and every day. We are putting pieces together and having confidence and momentum heading into the Christmas break.”

Christine Lizas scored 13 points to lead the Mallards. Maddy Shanahan added eight.

The 7-0 Royals will face 4-0 Lake Forest Friday, Dec. 20, at Delmarva Christian.
