Delmarva Christian boys tame the Jags 70-44 in ESIAC semis

February 21, 2019

The Delmarva Christian boys’ basketball team followed their girls’ team in defeating Salisbury Christian for the third time in three ESIAC games this season, putting up a 26-point victory over the Jags in the ESIAC semifinals Feb. 19.

Junior forward Andrew Workman led the Royals with 17 points, including three from behind the three-point line. Wyatt Kwiatkowski added 11, Chase Hesson dropped six, and AJ Kwiatkowski and Chris Fleurima each scored five.

The first quarter ended with Delmarva Christian taking a slim 12-8 lead. Workman scored 12 points in the second quarter to pace the Royals to a 33-19 halftime lead.

“In the first quarter, we settled for a lot of jumpers,” said Workman. “We didn’t settle into our offense. Between quarters, coach stressed to us to move the ball more and get open without the ball, and take better shots. I think we did a really good job with that.”

The Jags found it hard to guard the Royals in the second half, as they scored 14 points in the third stanza and sprinted to a 23-point fourth-quarter performance.

“Shane Endicott really has the Salisbury Christian program on the up,” said Royals coach Micah Twedell. “He’s done a awesome job with them. The first time we played them, they improved, and the second time they almost beat us. We just managed to pull that one out. In this game, I think it helps when Drew [Workman] gets hot and we see a couple of buckets go in the basket. Our defense has been our best offense all season. When we play tough defense, it seems like the ball starts going through the hoop. These guys realize that if they want an ESIAC title and to get into the state tournament, the defense is gonna to do it for them.”

Aaron Downes led the Jags with 11 points. Mark Nyce and Cameron Johnson each had 10 points.

The Royals were set to host Worcester Prep Feb. 21 in the ESIAC tournament final.
