Delmarva Christian girls’ basketball downs Seahawks

February 6, 2019

Delmarva Christian girls’ basketball (11-4) used a tenacious trap defense to put a damper on the Sussex Academy (5-12) offense to earn a 38-23 win at home.

Sara Walton scored 10 points to lead the Royals. Grace Fetterman and Abby Agapito each scored seven, while Jabre'a Purnell added six and Savannah Stewart, Kandice Schlabach and Claire Marshall had four. Olivia Giltner hit two foul shots.

“I feel our defense is our strength,” said Sara Walton. “As long as we work hard we’ll do okay in the ESIAC Conference.”

“We’ve practiced our trapping defense at every practice and we get a lot of baskets off of steals,” said Delmarva’s Grace Fetterman who scored seven. “I like to dish off to my teammates, though. I like to have my teammates finish off a play and get their points.”

“We try to hang our hat on our high pressure defense,” said Royals coach Jedidah Roach. “The defense has to remain the same. We have to carry that to where ever we play.”

Nicole DiAmico and Tabitha Curry scored seven points for the Seahawks, while Annabella Guckes and Delaney Smith put three points in the book, Sharon Rodriguez scored a basket and Kathryn Van Pelt added a point.

The Royals will host St. Thomas More at 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8. Sussex Academy will host The Early College High School of Dover at 5:15 p.m., Monday, Feb. 11.
