January 23, 2020

After not playing since Dec. 27 due to Delmarva Christian’s J-Term, the Royals girls’ basketball squad came back to the hardwood with a powerful 76-22 win over Sts. Peter & Paul Jan. 22. The Royals move to 10-1, while the Sabres are 4-8.

Royals junior point guard Grace Fetterman tallied 19 to lead all scorers. Sophomore Sierra Troyer hit for 13. Each had one from behind the three-point line. Freshman Ainsley Bell added 10, Savannah Stewart had eight, Evelyn Jensen tallied seven and Kandice Schlabach scored six. Mara Agapito, Sara Walton, Jabre'a Purnell and Elizabeth Moyer rounded out the scoring.

The Royals started out blazing, as they put up 23 points in the first quarter and went into the halftime break with a 48-14 lead. The second half was more of the first, as wholesale substitutions by the Lady Royals garnered a 28-8 addition, ending the running clock with a 54-point victory.

“We did have a few chances to practice during J-Term even though it was mostly on our own,” Stewart said. “A few of us went out of the country to do mission work.”

Stewart and Fetterman took trips to Jamaica for their J-Term mission work.

“Gracie and I tried stay in shape by running on the beach,” Stewart said. “We didn’t have a lot of free time there.”

“We were a little rusty on some things,” Fetterman said. “But this game definitely helped us come back.”

“We need to keep pushing ourselves to get on the level where we want to be,” said Troyer, who interned with elementary students at Greenwood Mennonite School over J-Term. “We have to focus on the little things and progressively work up.”

“We had little workouts over J-Term because so many players went out of the country,” said Royals head coach Jedidiah Roach. ”We just did drills a few times and worked on individual things to prepare the girls for when everyone came back from their mission work.”

The Royals are averaging 75 points per game, more than doubling their opponents’ scores.

“We really stress defense,” said Roach. “Sometimes I’m surprised when I look up at the scoreboard and see how far we are ahead. As long as were are sliding our feet, are in good rotation and playing a tight defense, I’m happy.”

The Lady Royals will travel to New Castle Saturday, Jan. 25, to battle the Colonials of William Penn.
