Delmarva Power to increase natural gas supply rates

November 7, 2016

Delmarva Power announced Oct. 27 that residential natural gas customers will see an increase in their monthly bill of $6.63 or about 5.8 percent. Overall, a residential customer's average monthly gas bill will change from approximately $114.65 to $121.28. Billing impact will vary based on customer usage.

This change in gas supply rates stems from Delmarva Power filing the annual Gas Cost Rate adjustment Aug. 31, with the Delaware Public Service Commission to reflect the changing cost of procuring natural gas for its customers. The rate increase is reflective of the costs associated with natural gas as well as its transportation into the region.

Natural gas is still the most affordable heating source for homes and businesses this winter. Since 2010, Delmarva Power customers have experienced a 28 percent ($48) decrease in total natural gas bills. This is the first GCR increase for Delmarva Power customers in five years.

The rate adjustment is a dollar-for-dollar pass-through to customers for the natural gas Delmarva Power buys on their behalf. The company is permitted to recover its costs for buying the commodity but does not earn a profit on the sale. Delmarva Power's purchase of natural gas is overseen by the Delaware Public Service Commission.

The company also offers customers Budget Billing, a fixed payment plan based on the customer's 12-month average bill. Customers can enroll online or call 1-800-375-7117. For more information on saving energy and money homes or businesses, go to www.delmarva.com.
